Monticello, Iowa (August 5, 1989) – A huge crowd packed the grandstand and the hillside on Saturday, waited out a rain shower, then watched the annual stock car races at the Great Jones County Fair.
Gus Hughes delighted his hometown fans by winning the modified feature, Hughes fought off early challenges by Bill Beckman, also of Monticello, then late in the race, withstood a hard-charging Skip Frey of Ely.Gayln Mitchell of Decorah made the long tow pay off as he topped a strong field of pro stocks. Dan Bohr, also from Decorah, finished second ahead of Tom Guckenberger of Dubuque.
Fifth-four bombers checked in, and fans witnessed some slam-bang action. Gary Hughes of Monticello took the lead late from Rich Glenn of Olin and held on for the win.
