Curtis Turner
Springfield, Ill. (August 25, 1963) – Curtis Turner had two big surprises Sunday when he won the 100-mile Allen Crowe Memorial stock car race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
The Indianapolis driver was surprised when A.J. Foyt, who had led from the first lap, was forced to refuel his 1963 Plymouth on the 96th lap. Foyt led by three-quarters of a mile at this point, but his pit stop allowed Turner to take the lead.
Turner’s second surprise came when his own 1963 Ford ran out of fuel as he came down the front straightaway on the final lap. Turner actually coasted across the finish line to win the first prize of $2,054.
Foyt, of Houston, Tex., settled for second with Jim Hurtubise of North Tonawanda, N.Y., third behind the wheel of a 1963 Ford. Fourth, in a 1962 Ford, was Whitey Gerken of Villa Park and Norm Nelson of Racine, Wis., driving a 1963 Plymouth, was fifth.
