1969 – Marshalltown Fair Wins to Keen, LeCroy, Hansen

By Denny Carter

Marshalltown, Iowa (August 8-12, 1969) – Mike Keen, Jerry LeCroy, and Curt Hansen were feature winners at the Central Iowa Fair in Marshalltown.

Drivers competed for a $1,300 purse on Friday and Saturday night and a $1,200 purse on Tuesday.

Keen, of Marshalltown, worked his way up through the pack to win the late model opener on Friday night. Keen also placed second in his heat and third in the Australian Pursuit.

A really hot driver Friday night was Merle Leonard of Marshalltown who followed Keen in the feature, won the Australian Pursuit and the first heat.

Jerry LeCroy of Des Moines, who took third in the feature, finishing ahead of George Barton of Des Moines and Joel Ramussen of Gilbert to win the third heat.

Paul Uhlenberg of Garwin captured honors over Keen in the second heat.

John Schroyer of Laurel topped the sportsman field, winning his heat and the feature – a repeat performance from last week. Schroyer now has four wins for the season.

LeCroy charged from the rear of the field on Saturday to score the late model feature win on Saturday. Lynn Warden of Marshalltown led the first three laps before Joel Rasmussen took over. Rasmussen’s lead would be short-lived as a broken axle sent him limping to the infield. Warden would take over again and lead one more lap before LeCroy took over for good on lap 8 and led the rest of the way to the checkers.

Chuck Warnhoff of Marshalltown won the Australian Pursuit ahead of Paul Uhlenberg. Warden won the first heat while Jim Cowan of Marshalltown was the second heat winner. Friday night’s feature winner, Keen, won the third heat.

In the sportsman division, Carroll Menter from Marshalltown, a late arrival, won his heat and the feature.

Curt Hansen of Dike would walk off with late model honors on Tuesday and won a $100 bonus for an outsider winning on his first or second time. Hansen became the second driver this season to earn the bonus. Ed Sanger of Waterloo was the first driver to accomplish the feat.

In addition to winning the feature, Hansen also won the first heat.

Joel Ramussen won the B-semi and led all the way in winning the third heat. Arlo Becker of Atkins won the A-semi and Del McDowell of Ames captured the second heat.

In sportsman action, Carroll Menter made it two-in-a-row, winning the feature over Jon Schroyer and George Eruom of Marshalltown.
