1989 – Blaney USA Winner at Moberly

Moberly, Mo. (August 4, 1989) – For the second time in as many weeks, the United Sprint Association packed the house at the all-new Moberly Motorsports Park. The star-studded sprint car event produced a record crowd, and a first-time series win for former NCRA driving star, Dave Blaney.

Blaney grabbed the $5,250 first prize in a thrilling drive from his sixth starting position. Steve Kinser took second from his seventh starting position while Mark Kinser took placed third. Sammy Swindell and Danny Lasoski took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Lasoski took the early lead when a yellow flew on lap 3. On the restart, Lasoski continued to lead followed by Mark Kinser, Blaney, Steve Kinser, and Swindell. Popular Jac Haudenschild saw his chance for victory evaporate along with the water coming out of his exhaust.

While the Missouri-bred Lasoski desperately wanted his first USA victory, it was Blaney who had the right setup and used the dangerous but less crowded high line to take the lead on lap 9.

Despite another caution on lap 11, Blaney had the right stuff and cruised to a well-deserved victory ahead of Steve Kinser, Mark Kinser, Swindell and Lasoski.

The last 10 laps provided plenty of excitement as Randy Smith charged from his 14th starting position to finish sixth at the stripe.
