Owatonna, Minn. (August 18, 1979) – Red Dralle of Evansdale, Iowa, was the winner of the 50-lap Minnesota Speedways, Inc.- sponsored feature race at the Steele County Fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon.
Dralle, by virtue of winning the second heat, started on the outside of the front row, took over the lead from first heat winner and polesitter Terry Hansen of Owatonna on lap 3, and never relinquished it thereafter.
A first lap crash eliminated Harvey Patterson of St. Ansgar, Iowa, Bruce Busho of Owatonna, and Mark Noble of Blooming Prairie from the 30-car field. A lap later, Ted Zieman of Mason City, Iowa, would drop out with mechanical problems.
When Marion Smiley of Phoenix, Ariz., hit a guardrail on the track and separated his soft-sand running tires from the wheels, he dropped out of second place, leaving Jim Bruggeman of White Bear Lake to hold that spot the remainder of the way.
Leon Plank of Mondovi, Wis., made the biggest jump in the race, coming from his 14th starting position to finish third while Dave Bjorge of Austin relayed his 16th starting position into a fourth-place finish.
However, it was the jolly, round fellow in the red suit who accepted the MSI trophy and the $1,200 first-place prize money at the end of a hot, grueling afternoon.
