Cedar Rapids, Iowa (August 15, 1981) – Denny Osborn of Cedar Falls won the “Winston 50” Saturday night at Hawkeye Downs Speedway, an event shortened after an accident sent veteran driver Darrell Dake to an area hospital with a broken leg.
Osborn started on the outside of the third row, and he passed Tom Hearst of Wilton midway through the contest. Osborn remained in front despite two restarts and was in the lead when the race was halted after Dake slammed into the turn three wall on the 42nd lap.
Dake, who has been racing approximately 30 years, had a tire go down on his car and he went out of control, slamming into the wall. Reportedly, Dake’s foot slipped off the clutch on impact and the clutch smashed into his leg, causing the break.
Scott Braun of Cedar Falls won the sportsman feature while Tom Fitzpatrick of Gilbertsville won the IMCA modified main event.
Jerry Naylor of Scotch Grove won the street stock feature but was disqualified when he refused to sell his engine after it was claimed. Gus Hughes of Monticello was declared the winner and his engine was claimed.
