Madison, Minn. (August 11, 1988) – Jim Kellen won the 30-lap IMCA modified feature at his hometown track of Madison Speedway on Thursday night during the second stop on the IMCA Modified National Series “Tour of the Northland” circuit.
Kellen, a dominant force all season long at Madison, started on the inside of the second row and battled with pole sitter Merv Chandler of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Dude Thompson of Huxley, Iowa, from the drop of the green flag.
This trio settled in the groove and led the field of 26 cars for the first 18 laps. On the 19th circuit, Kellen, who had passed Thompson on lap 12, got around Chandler, coming down the front chute to grab the lead.
The race’s only yellow flew on lap 22 when Jack Miles of Des Moines came to a stop in turns three and four.
On the restart, Kellen maintained his cushion as Chandler’s mount started to slowly fall off the pace and eventually forced him to the infield. Thompson moved back into second and was joined by J.L. Cooper of Claycomb, Mo., and Scott Tofte of Madison. Tofte was the hardest charger of the night, as he finished fourth after starting in the 15th position.
Kellen held his line and kept Thompson at bay to capture the win. Cooper was third followed by Tofte and Randy Walford of Watertown, S.D. Walford also had a fine finish as he moved up from his 12th starting position.
Miles, Walford, Chandler, and Ron Luitjens of Brewster were heat winners. The B-main was scratched because of threatening weather.
Jeff Wildung won the 12-lap IMCA stock car feature.
