Mert Williams
Davenport, Iowa (August 21, 1964) – Mert Williams, Rochester, Minn., captured the rich purse in the modified division’s 50-lap feature race Friday night at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds.
It was the second consecutive victory at the Davenport track for Williams.
A purse of $3,000 was offered to the drivers in Friday night’s program.
Charlie Moffitt of Stanwood nailed down second place with Cal Swanson of Reinbeck taking third. Verlin Eaker of Austin, Minn., was fourth, followed by John Moss of Iowa City.
Heat winners in the modified division were Moss, Moffitt, and Benny Hofer of Rock Island, Ill. Del Williams of Aledo, Ill., won the semi-main.
Jerry Orndorf of Davenport won the novice feature while heat winners included Roy Bennett, Roy Marks, and Wendell Essex.
With four laps remaining in the 50-lap main event, Short Bennett’s machine spun out in the fourth turn and rolled three times as the result of losing a wheel. Going out of competition on the same incident was Johnny Beauchamp of Atlantic, who hit Bennett’s car as it was rolling.
