Memphis, Mo. (August 15, 1969) – Cliff Powell of Hannibal and Mac McDowell of Fort Madison, Iowa, took home the honors Friday night at the Scotland County Fairgrounds. The track re-opened after having been closed for several weeks.
Powell managed to take the lead on the first lap and hold it all the way to capture the semi-modified feature event. Powell’s semi-super modified was really fined-tuned as he also won the trophy dash and heat race.
Following Powell across the finish line were Sonny Smyser of Glenwood, Bob Ensminger of Burlington, Iowa, Bud Palmer of Kirksville, and Gary Latham of Centerville, Iowa.
Latham edged out Stave Hainline of Bonaparte, Iowa, on the last lap to win the first heat. Powell won the second heat and trophy dash with Ensminger finishing second to him in both races.
Mac McDowell took the lead on lap 9 of the 12-lap super stock feature to win that contest. Junior Reese of Bloomfield, Iowa, was second followed by Don Green of Kirksville. Tommy Roberts of Lancaster and Ivan Long of Pittsfield rounded out the top-five.
Roberts led the first eight laps of the super stock feature and was ahead by a wide margin when a front spindle broke and he was forced to slow his pace. That gave the top spot to McDowell, who charged to victory.
After taking the checkered, Roberts plowed into the first turn guardrail, causing considerable damage to his car.
McDowell also won the trophy dash and the second heat. Roberts won the first heat.
