1987 – Mullens Completes Two-Race Sweep

Wichita, Kan. (August 8, 1987) – Buddy Mullens of Wichita won his second IMCA Modified National Series feature race in two nights as he captured the event Saturday night at 81 Speedway.

A field of 41 IMCA modifieds participated in the program.

Mullens took the lead away from Rick Cox of Davenport, Iowa, on a restart as Cox anticipated another lap under yellow and dropped back to fifth. Larry McDaniels of Wichita also led for a time as he passed Mullens and Cox but dropped out with mechanical problems.

However, Cox worked his way back into second and regained the lead from Mullens a few laps later. The lead lasted only a lap, however, as Mullens found his way around Cox and stayed there to the finish.

Cox wound up second with Steve Echer of Wichita third, Martin Bennett of Des Moines, Iowa, fourth, and current IMCA Modified National Series point leader Ray Cox Jr. of Walcott, Iowa, fifth.

Heats were won by Ted Beaman of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Ray Cox Jr., Van Gemmill of Ponca City, Okla., Walt Schilt of Muskogee, Okla., and Delbert Smith off Wichita.

Gary Dunkle of Chanute won the B-feature.
