Herschel Buchanan
Davenport, Iowa (August 20, 1955) – Herschel Buchanan, Shreveport, La., captured the 100-mile stock car race Saturday afternoon at the Mississippi Valley Fair, finishing about a half-lap ahead of the field.
A crowd of 3,900 watched Buchanan and his Ford Thunderbird outrun and outlast the remainder of the red, hot field.
Bill Harrison, Topeka, Kan., finished second, driving a 1955 Olds, while Delmar Donaldson, Burlington, took third place in a 1955 Olds.
Don White, Keokuk, the1954 IMCA stock car champion, took an early lead in the race and by the 75th lap had built up a sizeable margin. However, engine trouble forced the diminutive speedster to the sidelines, where he stop for hurried repairs.
But a couple of more pit stops finally took the champion out of contention. Buchanan took over after White made his pit stop and was never threatened the remainder of the way.
The winner turned the 100 miles in 1 hour, 55 minutes, and 15.10 seconds, in spite of three cautions.
