1984 – Swindell Tops ‘Jerry Weld Memorial’

Sammy Swindell won the ninth annual Jerry Weld Memorial at I-70 Speedway.

Odessa, Mo. (August 7, 1984) – Sammy Swindell of Bartlett, Tenn., had to wrestle with his car most of the night, but finally won over the car and the entire field to score the $6,000 first prize in the ninth annual Jerry Weld Memorial at I-70 National Speedway on Monday night.

Earlier in the evening, the engine on Swindell’s mount let go at the end of the first time trial laps right after he set fourth fastest time, but his crew was able to install a new one before the first heat race. Sammy was able to finish second in his heat and qualify himself a start in the 25-lap feature.

Tim Green of Carmichael, Calif., jumped into the lead at the green but was run down by Bobby Davis Jr. on lap 7. On lap 9 Davis pulled to the inside of the front straight because of inbalance in his right rear tire when it filled with dirt, sending him to the ear of the field joining Swindell, who had been sent back earlier on lap 2 when his tire blew.

That put Green back on top with a charging Doug Wolfgang moving in on his tail and making the lead pass on lap 13. During their battle for first place, Swindell charged his way through heavy traffic up to third, and by lap 24 with the final lap coming, moved in to challenge the leaders.

On the white flag lap, Sammy drove low into turn one to move by Green and then drive even with Wolfgang on the back chute. Wolfgang’s brake lines were gone, leaving him no possibility to drive hard entering the final corners, and Swindell dove low again in turns three and four to take the lead and win on the final turn.

Wolfgang settled for second with Green taking third, Scott Ritchhart fourth, and “The Dude” Danny Lasoski rounding out the top five finishers.

Kenny Jacobs, Junior Parkinson, Davis, and Richard Griffin won heat races while Jimmy “Buckwheat” Sills won the last chance “B” feature.

In time trials, fast time was set by Jacobs, who turned the half-mile in 17.09 seconds.
