1979 - Blankenship Wins Memphis Mountain Dew Special

By Ida May Van Genderen

Memphis, Mo. (August 31, 1979) – Lem Blankenship jumped into the lead at the start from his pole position and continued to put light between himself and the rest of the field en route to capturing the Mountain Dew Special Friday night at Scotland County Speedway.

Blankenship, of Keokuk, Iowa, really had the race in his hands as he lapped car after car during the 25-lap feature. By the time the checkers came out, Blankenship had lapped everyone except runner-up Steve Fraise of Montrose, Iowa.

Cautions plagued the opening laps of the race but after the third restart, the field ran clean the rest of the way. On the first start, a few cars tangled on the backstretch putting Bo Smith of Hunnewell and Randy Harrison of Memphis to the pit area via wreckers. On the next restart, Paul Carr of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Russ Derr of Keokuk, Iowa, tangled on the fourth turn.

Jerry Pilcher of Bloomfield, Iowa, moved from his 15th starting position to finish third behind Blankenship and Fraise. Johnny Babb of Ottumwa, Iowa, and John Miller of Keokuk, Iowa, rounded out the top-five.

Pilcher had qualified for the feature by winning the consolation ahead of Derr. Paul Carr, Randy Harrison, and George Koontz of Memphis also qualified by completing the top-five.

Heat winners were Blankenship, Fraise, and Babb.
