1982 - Hearst, Fischlein Win at Iowa State Fair

 

Des Moines, Iowa (August 21, 1982) – Nearly 60 race cars in two classes were on hand Saturday night at the Iowa State Fair for the final race of the 1982 Iowa State Fair and point leaders prevailed before a capacity grandstand crowd.

Tom Hearst of Wilton, the national NASCAR Winston Racing Series point leader, won his 23rd NASCAR Grand American feature race of the season in the late model division while Dale Fischlein of Davenport, the International Motor Contest Association modified point leader, padded his advantage with a feature victory.

Hearst, who leads the Winston Racing Series Central Division point standings, posted another feature win Sunday night at Freeport, Ill., to pad his national lead with his 24th victory. Fischlein staked his 28th modified feature win of the season.

Hearst, who also won his heat race, held off Dick Schiltz of Waterloo, Bill Rice of Des Moines, and Tom Bartholomew of Waterloo for the late model feature win.

Also winning heat races were Roger Dolan of Lisbon, Denny Osborn of Cedar Falls, while Duane Steffe of Colona, Ill., who finished fifth in the feature, won the trophy dash.

Fischlein held off Jack Mitchell of Cedar Falls in winning the IMCA modified feature, while Todd Jensen of Waterloo was third. Bob Bowser of Cedar Rapids was fourth and Bernie Juliar of Hudson took fifth.

IMCA modified heat races were taken by Bowser, Fischlein, and Mitchell.
