Springfield, Ill. (Augst 18, 1973) – Jack Bowsher of Springfield, Ohio, won the Allen Crowe Memorial 100 USAC stock car race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds on Saturday afternoon before a crowd estimated at 13,000.
Bowsher drove a 1971 Ford Torino to a 20.1-second victory over Don White of Keokuk, Iowa, who was driving a 1973 Dodge.
Als finishing on the lead lap was Bay Darnell of Deerfield, who drove a 1972 Dodge, and Ernie Derr of Keokuk, Iowa, piloting a 1972 Dodge.
Bowsher averaged 74.781 miles per hour. His speed was slowed by three yellow flags for a total of 22 laps.
The race had to be stopped for fence repairs at the end of the fourth lap when a 1972 Dodge driven by Dan Weyker went through the barrier between turns three and four.
Another accident on lap 11 involved cars driven by Art Bormet and Joe Booher.
The third and final accident occurred on lap 31 and involved two-time and defending USAC national stock car champion Butch Hartman, Leonard Blanchard, and Larry Cope.
Hartman was able to continue after the accident despite serious body damage but was eliminated after 83 miles when his 1973 Dodge stalled on the backstretch.
Al Unser led the first 32 laps in his 1971 Ford before making a pit stop. Paul Feldner then led laps 33 through 46 in his 1972 Dodge.
Bowsher passed Feldner on the 47th lap and increased his margin gradually throughout the remainder of the race.
