Omaha, Neb. (September 24, 1988) – The “Flyin' Kosiski Brothers,” Steve, Joe, and Ed, showed 37 other drivers Saturday night why it's so tough to beat them on their home turf as Sunset Speedway closed out the season with the Winston Busch All-Star Tour program.
The way the night started out left a lot of people in attendance whether the Kosiski’s or anyone else could keep up with newly crowned NASCAR Winston Racing Series Central Region champion Dale Fischlein of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Fischlein edged Steve Kosiski for fast time with a time of 19.48 seconds.
Fischlein then nearly lapped the entire field in the first of two 20-lap qualifiers.
The second 20-lap qualifier saw Steve Kosiski involved in an early accident that tore up the front fenders on his car. Steve ducked into the pits so his crew could inspect the damage. After removing some sheet metal, he returned in time to join the rear of the 20-car field. Steve then proceeded to sail past some pretty stiff competition in 20 laps to finish second behind Rollie Frink of Davenport, Iowa.
In the 50-lapper, Steve’s brother Joe took the initial lead, beating Frink to the first set of turns. Ed and Steve moved into third and fourth-place by lap 2. On lap 5, Ed took second from Frink and closed in on Joe.
On lap 7, Steve moved into third on the dry-slick racing surface and four laps later, powered by Ed to take over second. For the next five circuits, Joe and Steve raced side-by-side with Steve finally taking command on lap 16. From there, he stretched his advantage and was never seriously threatened.
At the checkers, Steve won by a quarter of a lap over Joe with Rollie Frink taking third, Dale Fischlein in fourth, and Bill Martin of Council Bluffs rounding out the top-five.
In the companion bronco feature, John Kinney Jr. of Omaha continued his dominance of the division by winning his ninth feature of the season over Dennis Cook of Missouri Valley, Iowa.
