Darrell Sells won the Tri-State Championships at the Mississippi Valley

Davenport, Iowa (September 30 ,1978) – Darrell Sells of Waverly made his first trip to Davenport and won the 40-lap Tri-States Championship stock car race Saturday night.
Sells also won his heat race along with Tom Hearst of Wilton and Verlin Eaker of Mechanicsville.
Hearst led the first half of the feature until he was passed by Sells, then faded back to fourth.
Hearst was later black-flagged for a loose roof, stopped to make repairs, and ended up finishing ninth.
