Wisconsin Dells, Wis. (September 3, 1988) – Steve Carlson pulled one of the biggest upsets of the year Saturday night at Dells Motor Speedway as the rookie topped a star-studded field of ARTGO Challenge Series stars to win the 12th annual Summer Nationals 100-lap feature.

The win was the first-ever for Carlson on the tour and he became the eighth different ARTGO winner of the year.

A spectacular finish saw Tom Carlson squeeze past Kevin Cywinski at the finish line for runner-up money. This also marks the first time brothers have finished one and two in an ARTGO main event.

Saturday’s card attracted 45 entrees from six states, but a late afternoon rainstorm forced officials to cancel time trials and use a combination of point standings and a draw to line up the events.

Cywinski bolted into the lead with Tom and Steve Carlson in hot pursuit. Steve moved into second and then caught Cywinski, also a rookie on the tour, in heavy traffic, on the 34th lap to gather the lead. He would survive the only caution of the race four laps later to score the victory.

Following the two Carlsons and Cywinski across the finish line were ARTGO point leader Butch Miller and Rich Bickle Jr.
