Oregon, Wis. (September 13, 1969) – Marv Marzofka survived four restarts caused by various mishaps to win the 150-lap Grand National half-mile championship here at Capital Speedway on Sunday afternoon.
The likable Wisconsin Rapids speedster took over the lead on the 41st circuit and then brought home more than $1,250 of the $4,500 purse, which included the winner’s share of $700 plus $5 per lap in lap money.
Bob Peterson of Wausau led the opening nine laps after outracing the 24-car field to the first turn. Then I was Dick Trickle of Wisconsin Rapids, who held the lead briefly until lap 15. From then until the 41st, it was Jim Back of Vesper out front.
The race was stopped four times because of mishaps – twice to clean up oil spills from blown engines and twice to clear the track of disabled race cars. With car on and off the track throughout the event, the race still saw 18 cars running at the end.
Norm Bartnick of Portage won the 40-lap semi-main which saw the yellow flag wave twice before the eighth lap was completed. It too, was stopped later due to multiple car crashes.
Jim Back set fast time in qualifying, with a time of 20.38 seconds. Back also won the 8-lap fast dash.
The race, contested on Capital’s new half-mile paved oval, drew an estimated crowd of 4,000.
