Don White
Du Quoin, Ill. (September 1, 1968) – Don White sat on the pole, then leaned back and watched the early charges fall by the wayside as the Keokuk, Iowa, veteran won the 100-mile United States Auto Club late model stock car race at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds on Sunday.
When the dust finally settled on a long afternoon, White and his 1968 Dodge Charger had won more than $6,000 out of a record purse of $10,265 before a record crowd of 21,500. A.J. Foyt of Houston, Tex., was second in a 1968 Ford Torino.
Sal Tovella of Addison, Ill., was third in a ’68 Charger, Jack Knippel of Northfield, Wis., fourth in a ’67 Dodge and Parnelli Jones of Torrance, Calif., rounded out the top five finishers in a ’68 Ford Torino.
Al Unser slipped into the lead on the 10th lap but White regained it on lap 27. White made his only pit stop on lap 74, putting Foyt in front. But Foyt was forced to stop for fuel the very next lap, giving White the lead, a position he wouldn’t relinquish for the remaining 25 circuits.
In winning his fifth USAC stock car race of the season, White averaged 76.731 miles per hour for the race and moved into third place in the national standings behind Foyt and Roger McCluskey.
