Sterling, Ill. (September 4, 1967) – Darrell Dake of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, took the special 50-lap Labor Day Invitational on Monday afternoon at Sterling Speedbowl Park. Dake took the lead on lap 33 from early leader Ben Hofer of Rock Island and ran unchallenged the remainder of the way.
Verlin Eaker, the speed merchant from Cedar Rapids, and Lloyd Ewing, the fast qualifier from Kewanee, also got by Hofer and finished second and third, respectively. Hofer settled for fourth followed by Jim Gerber of Mt. Joy. Thirty-seven cars were on hand for the holiday championship.
The afternoon sunshine made the show a wild affair as the hard, dry track made spinouts the order of the day. Several top drivers, including Bill McDonough and John Schlemmer, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and former IMCA champion Johnny Beauchamp of Atlantic, Iowa, were involved in mishaps in the headliner.
Heat winners were Jim Kaehler, Bruce Haack, Gerber and McDonough. Bill Hunter won the consolation.
