Slinger, Wis. (September 5, 1988) – It was a record setting night for Al Schill at Slinger Speedway.
Schill led off the regular season finale by turning a record qualifying lap of 11.479 seconds, then later won the 88-lap late model feature to wrap up an unprecedented fifth driving championship in that division.
The show was held on Monday night after being rained out 24 hours earlier.
The main event had to be a complete restart thanks to a first turn spin by Rich Somers. When things finally got underway, Mike Reichenberger led the first 20 circuits which included a yellow when Tony Strupp and Bob Brownell spun on lap 18.
Dennis Lampman gained the upper hand on lap 21, moments before Robbie Reiser spun, triggering another caution. After taking second from Reichenberger on lap 29, Schill, who had started 16th, was able to close up on Lampman during a yellow flag necessitated by a Ken Reiser spin on the 31st circuit. Two laps later, Schill moved into the top spot.
Schill slowed briefly, allowing Lampman to regain first place on lap 35, but 11 circuits later, Schill moved back on top to stay. He finished three-car-lengths ahead of Lampman at the checkers, with Conrad Morgan, Brownell, and Reichenberger rounding out the top-five.
Lampman earlier had won the $1,000 Challenge of Champions race. Rich Bickle Jr. had led the first 23 of the event’s 40 laps before Lampman took over on the 33rd round.
