Gene Bell
St. Paul, Minn. (September 5, 1964) – Gene Bell of Schoolcraft, Mich., and Dick Good of Mishawaka, Ind., racing buddies and competitors for many years, waged one of the best two-car duels ever seen at the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday afternoon.
Bell roared home the winner of the 30-lap feature at 19,783 cheered him on. He drove a Buick conversion.
Both newcomers to the International Motor Contest Association circuit, Bell and Good rode bumper-to-bumper much of the way around the half-mile asphalt track.
Good, piloting a Chevy-powered car, took the lead on the first lap and held tight for 28 circuits. Several times, Bell almost got his front tires inside of Good’s racer, but each time Good managed to stay in front.
As the two drivers entered the first turn on the 29th lap, Bell came up on the outside and poured on the speed. He overtook Good, who won this year’s Little 500 in Anderson, Ind., and extended his lead to nine car lengths at the checkered flag. Time of the race was 10 minutes and 41.25 seconds.
Bell, 38, gained his feature win after two months on the IMCA tour. He previously had competed in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, driving all types of cars on both dirt and asphalt.
