Karl Busson
St. Paul, Minn. (September 3, 1967) – Karl Busson of Toledo, Ohio, the IMCA point leader, inherited the top spot with 19 laps to go when race leader Bill Koepler of Fostoria, Ore., blew an engine on his Chevy conversion roadster and won the Golden 200 at the Minnesota State Fair before 21,576 fans.
Koepler took the lead from Busson on lap 147 when the Busson pitted for fuel. Three laps before Koepler’s roadster conked out, it began spilling oil. Koepler did not make a pit stop before bowing out for good.
Busson started 16th in the 24-car field in sweeping to his second IMCA victory of the season.
Bob Davis of Dayton, Ohio, was second and Russ Laursen of Cumberland, Wis, finished third.
Defending IMCA national champion Jerry Richert of Forest Lake finished sixth. He had earned the pole position with a qualifying time of 20.46 seconds around the paved half-mile oval.
The winner of the 20-lap consolation, to determine the last six starters, was Don Mack of East Grand Forks.
