Burlington, Iowa (September 12, 1987) – Steve Fraise of Montrose took the lead from Jerry Pilcher en route to victory Saturday in the final IMCA Late Model Summer Series event of the season at 34 Raceway Park.
Pilcher, from Bloomfield, led the early laps as Fraise moved towards the front. Once Fraise was out in front, he stayed there throughout the remainder of the 35 laps.
Dave Birkhofer of Muscatine finished second while Rick Wendling of Hazelton was a strong third. Wendling did not qualify through his heat race but was a guaranteed starter because of his point standing in the Summer Series. However, he started well back in the field, coming on strong for the third-place finish.
Rounding out the top-five were Pilcher and Lem Blankenship of Keokuk. Jeff Aikey of Cedar Falls finished sixth, assuring himself of the Summer Series championship.
Birkhofer won the Race of Champions event while heat wins went to Blankenship, Curt Martin of Independence, Fraise, and Aikey. Mitch Fretheim of Decorah won the semi-feature.
In pro stock action, Dan Warth of Danville won the feature over James Pogemiller of Burlington. Eric Spaw of Cedar Rapids won the hobby stock feature.
