Hartford, S.D. (September 15-16, 1979) – Doug Wolfgang of Sioux Falls won the fourth annual Hartford Open at Hartford Speedway on Saturday and Sunday.
Wolfgang thus becomes the first driver to win the event more than once. He did it with Doug and Joanne Howell’s sprinter, normally driven by Don Mack of East Grand Forks, Minn. Mack is very busy with the potato harvest and passed up the season finale.
John Stevenson of St. Paul, Minn., winner of the Saturday night feature, took the lead until Wolfgang got past him coming out of turn four. Then, Randy Smith of Norwalk, Iowa, got by Stevenson and started to challenge Wolfgang, only to blow a tire which brought out the yellow flag and gave Smith the opportunity to change tires.
Gordy Lamb of Fargo, N.D., won the “B” feature while Jerry Richert Sr. of Forest Lake, Minn., won the “C” feature. Wolfgang took the “A” trophy dash while Lou Kennedy of Winnipeg, Manitoba, won the “B” trophy dash and Sonny Smyser of Lancaster, Mo., was the “C” trophy dash winner.
In addition to Stevenson, Saturday winners included Lamb in the “B” feature, Smyser in the “C” feature, and with heat wins going to Mike Pinckney of Des Moines, Stevenson, Lenard McCarl of Des Moines, Wolfgang, and Smith.
