Farley, Iowa (September 21, 1969) – The “King of the Road,” Darrell Dake of Cedar Rapids, has the distinction of going on record as the first heat winner but more importantly, the first feature winner on the new half-mile speedway here on Sunday afternoon. His reminder is the $700 and two trophies he carried home.
Dake had little to no trouble winning the 25-lap main event. Dubuque’s Dick Nesteby ran second to Dake until lap 17 when he appeared to have some mechanical issues and dropped off the pace.
Crossing the finish line behind Dake were Dr. Al Mayner of Winthrop and John Connolly of Delhi.
Heat wins went to Dake, Reinbeck’s Cal Swanson, and Connolly. Bill Zwanziger of Waterloo won the consolation.
Track officials did have their headaches to deal with, the biggest was keeping the track watered. As fast as the track was getting watered, the wind and sun would dry it out even faster.
Time trials were dispensed and drivers drew for positions.

Consolation – Bill Zwanziger, Waterloo
