Superior, Wis. (September 23, 1972) – A chilly night at the Tri-State Fairgrounds found over 2,000 racing fans on hand to witness the second annual Russ Laursen Memorial Classic.
Dave Skari of Grand Forks, N.D., repeated his big victory from the Mid-Canada Invitational in Thunder Bay, Ont., the previous weekend as he outdrove his competitors to take home the big trophy and prize money.
Twenty-two out of the 30 modifieds entered ran in the feature event in which the caution flag came out numerous times as several drivers spun out.
Barry Kettering held the lead for half the race until he was forced to the sidelines with mechanical issues. Skari was right there to take over and held his lead over Al Jacobson and Jim Peterson to take the checkered flag.
The fans were on the edge of their seats during the late model feature as Phil Prusak, Don Roseen, and Kenny Mann exchanged the lead several times as they wove their way through the 31-car field.
A little over halfway through the 35-lap main event, Prusak pulled up lame and retired to the infield. A hole, the size of a farmer’s match, was found in his radiator.
A little later, Kenny Mann dropped back as his car started to overheat.
That left Roseen out front with Tom Nesbitt mounting a challenge late in the race. Nesbitt, however, was unable to catch Roseen and Don became the defending champion for the late model class.
