Jack Hewitt won the prestigious Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State
Fairgrounds.
Indianapolis, Ind. (September 13, 1986) – Jack Hewitt led every lap on the way to capturing the USAC Silver Crown Championship Hoosier Hundred Saturday afternoon at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Hewitt gained the lead on the opening lap but on round two the red flag waved when Johnny Parsons and Steve Butler tangled in the third turn. When the race resumed, Hewitt continued to lead until another red flag came out on lap 7 when Andy Hillenburg and Warren Mockler were involved in a mishap in turn three.
Again, Hewitt retained the lead when all out racing resumed. The race was sowed on lap 21 when Jerry Russell stalled in turn four and on lap 92 when Duke Cook came to a halt.
Hewitt maintained his cushion through the yellows and took the checkered ahead of Larry Rice. Chuck Gurney finished a lap back in third followed by Bobby Olivero and Tom Bigelow.
The victory increased Hewitt’s lead in the series’ point standings to a 440-point margin over Steve Butler.
Only 10 of the 32 starters were still running at the finish.
