Ramo Stott
Des Moines, Iowa (September3, 1961) – Ramo Stott of Keokuk won the 250-lap late model stock car feature Sunday night before a crowd of 11,000.
Driving a 1961 Ford, Stott covered the distance in 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 2.89 seconds for his third straight victory at the Iowa state Fairgrounds.
Keokuk drivers took the top four positions, Trailing Stott at the checkered flag was Dick Hutcherson, Ernie Derr, and Jerry McCredie.
The lead changed hands five times among the three leaders, with pit stops playing an important part. Stott went ahead for good on the 198th lap when Dick Hutcherson made his second stop for gas.
Hutcherson had led for 138 laps before stopping to refuel. Stott took over and led until he pitted for more gas. Derr went into the lead then and completed seven trips until he took a gas stop on lap 154.
Hutcherson went back out in front at that point and led until lap 198, when he had to stop for gas again.
Stott, who won the 200-lapper on the opening day of the Iowa State Fair, was a half-lap ahead of Hutcherson at the finish. Stott also captured the Iowa International 300 back in July.
