Cedar Rapids, Iowa (September 11, 1970) – Karl Sanger won the battle, but the war belongs to Red Droste.
The battle for the 25-lap feature for late model stock cars Friday night at Hawkeye Downs. The war was the season point championship and for the Waterloo redhead, it was his second in a row and his fourth in the last five years.
Karl Sanger, also of Waterloo, posed no threat for the season title, although he pretty much had things his own way in the feature from the fourth lap on. Glen Martin of Independence finished second behind Sanger and also had to settle for runner-up spot in the point race.
Martin wiped off 125 points off Droste’s leading total (he finished fifth in the feature), but the final figures showed Red winning 3,765 to 3,650.
Actually, it’s been a three-way battle the last three weeks, as Waterloo’s Ed Sanger, who finished fourth in the feature, placed third in points with 3,480.
Arlo Becker of Atkins won his sixth “B” modified feature of the season on the quarter mile. With the victory, Becker wrapped up the point title in that division.
