Donnellson, Iowa (July 22, 1988) – Rick Cox of Davenport took advantage of his pole position start and captured the 25-lap IMCA Modified National Series race Friday night before a big crowd at the Lee County Fair.
Cox, who currently ranks third in the National Series point standings, held off repeated challenges from Bruce Hanford for the victory. Rick Wages finished third, making it a 1-2-3 Davenport sweep. Rounding out the top-five were Merv Chandler of Cedar Rapids and Shane Davis of Rock Island, Ill.
National Series point leader Ron Becker of Tama lost an engine in a heat race, then barely made it to the track as the green flag waved for the start of the feature race. He lasted only a couple of laps, then pulled in for the evening.
That allowed Danny Wallace of Des Moines to trim Becker’s lead considerably. Becker entered the event with a 24-point lead – 1,892 to 1,868 – over Wallace, but Danny finished sixth Friday night and now trails by only four markers – 2,022 to 2, 018.
Heat winners were Harry Walker of Washington, Wages, Cox, and John Durbin of Silvis, Ill. Terry Pichon of Danville, Ill., won the B-main.
Chandler made the best of the night. He arrived late and missed his heat race. He started at the rear of the B-main and finished third to earn a starting spot in the main event, then came from a 22nd starting position to finish fourth.
