Droste, winner of the mid-season championship at Tunis, celebrates with his
11-year-old son Steve, who gets the thrill of holding the trophy.
Waterloo, Iowa (July 12, 1964) – Red Droste of Waterloo, the Tunis Speedway points leader, started from the pole position and led every one of the 50 laps, winning the mid-season championship in record time on Sunday night.
In winning his seventh feature of the season, Droste lowered the quarter-mile record for 50 laps at Tunis from 15 minutes and 50 seconds to 15 minutes and 24 seconds.
Earlier, John Connolly of Delhi, set a new record for a 10-lap heat race, winning the third heat in the time of 3 minutes and 2 seconds, eclipsing the old record by two seconds.
A crowd of 6,469 watched the action on a perfect night for racing.
