Independence, Iowa (July 13, 1968) – Ed Sanger of Waterloo nabbed the 50-lap mid-season championship at the Buchanan County Fairgrounds on Saturday night.
Sanger took the lead on lap 3, then gradually pulled away. After building a quarter of lap lead, a yellow flew with 10 laps to go bunching the field. Sanger maintained the lead but had to outlast fellow townsman Red Droste in the remaining laps to score thee victory.
Keith Pittman of Waterloo nabbed the 20-lap novice mid-season title ahead of the sentimental favorite, George Danehy of Independence.
In the 30-lap consolation, Harold O’Deen of Cedar Rapids turned the 3/8-mile oval into a first place finish ahead of Buzz Jensen of Hudson.
