Wisconsin Dells, Wis. (July 28, 1973) – Despite a poorly-running engine, Jim Sauter overhauled Jim Pierson with one lap to go to win the 50-lap mid-season championship feature for late models Saturday night at Dells Motor Speedway.
Pierson had taken the lead early in the race and built up a half-lap lead by the time Sauter had broken from the field. Slowly but surely, the Necedah pilot’s Nova inched it’s way closer and closer until pulling out front on the 49th lap of the 1/3-mile paved oval. Pierson held on to finish second with Marv Marzofka taking third.
Forty-two cars were on hand for the evening’s racing, thus making both a semi-feature and consolation race necessary. Harold Bahr of Minneapolis captured the 20-lap semi ahead of rookie Bill Gerritts, while Larry Anderson of La Crosse won the 12-lap consolation. Sauter also picked up the win in the trophy dash while Homer Spink, Ron Waite, Bob Agenau and John Rank accounted for heat victories.
Larry Detjens powered his own Dodge Challenger around the banked oval in 14.733 seconds for fast time honors.
