Lloyd Jorgenson takes the checkered flag to win the A-main at the Shelby
County Fair before a crowd of 1,900.
Harlan, Iowa (July 25, 1968) – Harlan drivers failed to dominate the Shelby County Fairgrounds Thursday as they had done last Sunday when Harland cars topped the field in each of the three features.
A Harlan car, owned by Dale Swanson and driven by Bill Wrich of Blair, Neb., won the first heat, then the out-of-towners took over in the winner’s circle.
Topping the A-main was Lloyd Jorgenson of Audubon, followed by Randy Sterner of Blair, Neb., and Dennis Hovinga of Laurens. A Harlan car, driven by Andy Rasmussen, and owned by Marvin Schramm of Harlan finished fourth
The A-main on Thursday was the first time that Wrich had not placed first at the new Harlan track. Since it opened on July 14, Wrich has won three heat races and two A-mains. Control problems dropped him to a fifth-place finish Thursday after he spun out twice.
At the start of the race, it was Wrich out front but on the first restart, it was Butch Householder of Algona getting the quick lead. Wrich’s two spinouts dropped him back and Householder later pulled out with mechanical issues.
Frank Jorgenson, son of the first-place finisher, was sixth in the same race.
Another Blair, Neb., driver, Randy Sterner, was a front-runner in the B-main, driving a 1961 Chevy. Finishing behind Sterner were four Harlan drivers – Paul Scott, Don Christensen, Dale Larsen, and Dave Stanley.
A late arrival and a quick change was the order of the day for the winner of the C-main, a car owned by Lanny Dvorak of Carroll, and driven by Bob Matson of Omaha.
Next came the quick change. Dvorak is in the process of switching the fuel from gas to alcohol but hasn’t gotten all of the bugs out of it yet. Arriving in Harlan with alcohol in the tank, Dvorak found after two-lap trial run, there was more work to be done. So, off came the alcohol carburetor, and it was replaced with one already track-tested and set for gas.
Because the car didn’t compete in a heat race, Matson’s starting position was at the back of the pack, but when it came time to win the money, he was first to the checkered flag.
Wrich, Householder, Sterner, and Bill Martin of Council Bluffs were heat winners.
