Hinsdale, Ill. (July 18, 1987) – Seven-time track late model champion Tony Izzo conducted a seminar Saturday night, or so it seemed, as he breezed to an easy win in the Pontiac Trans Am Stock Classic at Santa Fe Speedway.
Veteran driver Bill Bottoms took the lead at the outset but couldn’t hold on to it for long as Izzo quickly shot from his second row starting position and was out front before the first lap was completed. After two laps, Izzo started to put daylight between himself and the rest of the field.
On lap 4, “Little John” Provenzano had the engine blow on his car, leaving a trail of smoke and oil on the track and bringing out the yellow flag. Provenzano, currently third in the point standings, hopped into his brother Tony’s car and joined the back of the pack. It was to no avail, though, as he was unable to work himself into contention.
The only other thing to slow down the red-hot Izzo as he blazed around the slick larger oval was one more yellow flag. That was on the fifth lap as Bottoms and Jim O’Conner tangled.
Once the green was back out, Izzo ran away from the field and lapped every car except second place finisher Larry Jackson.
Ken Pohlman edged O’Conner for third with Jim Partipilo rounding out the top-five.
In other action, Jeff Kuhn found the groove and won the 30-lap sportsman feature.
