Independence, Iowa (July 28, 1979) – Rookie driver Gary Tigges of Durango outdrove and outdistanced the field here Saturday to win his first career late model feature.
Joining the late model ranks just six weeks ago, it didn’t take Tigges long to run with the very best.
Starting in the fifth row, Tigges took the top slot from Red Dralle of Evansdale on lap 10. Surviving five caution periods, the young man kept his cool as Waterloo drivers Greg Kastli and Bill Zwanziger continuously pressured him on the hard-slick 3/8-mile track.
Staying calm and keeping his car in the low groove, Tigges would emerge the winner with Kastli and Zwanziger following. Rick Wendling of Hazelton was fourth and Tom Fitzpatrick of Gilbertville took fifth.
Duane Bentley of Fairbanks scored his fourth sportsman feature win of the season after coming from his 11th starting position to first in just two laps. Taking the lead from Ben Schaefer of Raymond, Bentley put a good distance between himself and the rest of the competitors behind him.
Mike Grapp of Cedar Falls continues to dominate the roadrunner class, as he grabbed his sixth feature win of the season.
