Sterling, Ill. (July 21, 1968) – Competition was the name of the game at Speedbowl Park’s mid-season championship. John Connolly of Delhi, Iowa, came from his fourth row starting position to win the 50-lap feature.

The near-capacity crowd was on their feet for most of the contest as Connolly made his way through traffic early on, then began a battle with race leader Darrell Dake and second place Bill McDonough, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

At one time, Dake, McDonough, and Connolly ran together as if they were driving the same car. Finally, on lap 35 Connolly got around the outside of Dake for the lead he wouldn’t relinquish.

At the finish, it was Connolly, Dake, McDonough, Tom Hughes of Monticello, Iowa, and Bill Forbes of Rock Falls.

Heat wins were won by B.J. Higley of Sterling, John Engelkens of Morris, Forbes, and Fred Strube. The trophy dash was won by Tom Hughes, and the consolation went to B.J. Higley.
