1966 – White Takes First at Fair

Springfield Mile winner Don White takes a victory lap with car owner Ray Nichels.

Springfield, Ill. (August 19, 1966) - Don White, Keokuk, Iowa, driving a 1966 Dodge Charger, romped home with the victory in Friday’s Allen Crowe Memorial Classic, the 100-mile United States Auto Club late model stock car race at the Illinois State Fair.

Billy Foster, driving a 1965 Dodge, was second and Norm Nelson, in a 1966 Plymouth, came in third.

White, who started on the outside of fast qualifier Norm Nelson, jumped into the lead on the first lap and relinquished it only during a pit stop late in the race. Nelson, who at that time was running second, roared past White while he was leaving the pits, putting him into first place.

Just two laps later, however, Nelson had to make the one required pit stop, giving the lead back to White.

Although Nelson’s pit stop was a short one, Foster also passed him to regain second place.
