1967 – Dake Wins Davenport Crown

Darrell Dake

Davenport, Iowa (September 8, 1967) – Darrell Dake led from the opening lap to win the season championship feature at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds on Friday night.

The Cedar Rapids driver was chased to the finish line by Verlin Eaker, but Dake led he entire 50 laps in the late model title event. Eaker, also of Cedar Rapids, took runner-up honors.

Making it a complete sweep for Cedar Rapids was Bill McDonough with a third-place finish. The Cedar Rapids contingent ran 1-2-3 through the entire race, viewed by a crowd of 5,500.

It wasn’t until the 35th circuit that Eaker began to challenge Dake. He threatened to take the lead on lap 37, but Dake, who started on outside of the front row, held his position. Eaker had started the race on the pole position.

The racing program was held up better than an hour by rain and work was necessary to put the track in racing condition. Nearly every stock car driver helped in the drying of the track by driving their machines around the dirt oval for well over a half-hour.

Dake placed second to Eaker in the season point standings. Eaker won the mid-season championship earlier in the year.

Competition in the late model division was intense throughout the program and one of the hottest races came in the third heat. John Beauchamp of Atlantic won by half-a-car length over Don Bohlander of Glasford, Ill., who nipped Eaker by a bumper’s width.

The semi-main was also a hot contest with Hank Strube of Peoria, Ill., crossing the finish line mere feet ahead of Jim Gerber of Davenport. Placing a close third was Lloyd Ewing of Kewanee, Ill.

Terry Ryan of Davenport was the novice feature winner.
