1970 - Gaines wins Winchester ASA Sprint feature

Winchester, Ind. (August 2, 1970) – Dick Gaines shot past Darl Harrison on the 42nd lap to win the ASA-sanctioned 50-lap sprint car feature here Sunday afternoon.

Nolan Johncock took the lead on the first lap only to have a belt break on the fifth lap forcing him to drop out of the race. Harrison took over and held the lead until Gaines went by in his yellow roadster.

On the ninth lap the race was red flagged when Don Hewitt broke a wheel going into turn three. He sailed into the guardrail sending tires into the air along with a big ball of fire. He suffered a few minor burns.

On the restart Harrison took a big lead. Traffic slowed him up however giving Gaines the break he needed. The old veteran Benny Rapp was third with Dutch Wilkerson fourth and Ed Angle coming in fifth.

Heat wins went to Rapp, Nolan Johncock and Mike Johnson while Rapp won the trophy dash.

Darl Harrison recorded fast time for the afternoon with a clocking of 17.19 seconds around the half-mile oval. The time turned in by Harrison was faster than the track record for IMCA.

The trophy dash was record time also. Johnny White holds the IMCA record for 5 laps at 1.30.87. Rapp’s time was 1.28.68.

The feature was not recorded because of the red flag.
