1984 – Saldana’s Last Lap Surge Nets Du Quoin Win

Joe Saldana

Du Quoin, Ill. (September 3, 1984) – Joe Saldana led just one lap Monday afternoon at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, but it was the most important ass he overtook Ron Shuman on the final circuit to capture the 100-lap USAC Silver Crown Dirt Car event.

Fastest qualifier Chuck Gurney grabbed the lead on the opening lap and paced the first 75 circuits, which included six caution periods covering 44 rounds.

Shuman overtook Gurney on lap 76 and led until lap 79 when Gary Bettenhausen stalled on the front stretch for the final yellow of the race.

Shuman outran the pack until Saldana reeled in the leader on the final lap. Johnny Parsons took third ahead of Dave Blaney and Steve Chassey.
