Des Moines, Iowa (September 4, 1953) – Two drivers were in “fair condition” and a third had stitches in one eyelid Saturday after a series of crashes during the IMCA big car program at the Iowa State Fair.
Clyde Sullivan, 27, of Kansas City, and Bob Wright, 32, of Indianapolis, were both hospitalized after their cars upset. Jerry Kemp, 29, of St. Louis, suffered a cut eyelid after a stone went through his goggles.
Sullivan was hurt in the 3-lap trophy dash. He locked wheels with Dick Ferguson, Burbank, Calif., on the final turn. The collision sent Sullivan’s car somersaulting across the track into the retaining wall. He suffered dislocated shoulders.
Wright was hurt on the 14th lap of the main event and the contest was halted two laps later. Wright’s car crashed head-on into the wall on the west curve. He fractured his ribs and suffered multiple cuts.
Ferguson was leading the feature event when race promoter Al Sweeney decided to halt the race at the end of 16 laps due to hazardous track conditions.
Bobby Grim, Indianapolis, the pre-race favorite, trailed by seven car lengths. Grim spent most of the race fending off Bob Slater, the Kansas City star who dominated the racing here last year.
Slater was only a wheel’s length behind Grim at the finish. Jimmy Campbell, Bates City, Mo., and Wayne Selzer, Sioux City, rounded out the top-five.
Ferguson’s winning time was 4 minutes and 5.2 seconds.
