Mario Andretti
Du Quoin, Ill. (September 2, 1968) – Mario Andretti of Nazareth, Penn., and A. J. Foyt of Houston put on a flying finish before a crowd of 18,400 Monday afternoon with Andretti winning the 100-mile Ted Horn Memorial Auto Race by 1.7 seconds over Foyt at the Du Quoin State Fair.
Andretti took the lead on the eighth lap and held it until the finish with Foyt driving right on his tail pipe for 14 of the last 15 laps. It was Andretti's third victory of the 1968 United States Auto Club season.
The victory moved Andretti into second place in the national point standings with Bobby Unser of Albuquerque, N.M., holding his lead at 3,250. Andretti moved into second with 2,458 total and Al Unser, Bobby's younger brother, is third with 2,334.
Al Unser sat on the pole for Monday's 18-car starting field but held the lead less than a quarter of a mile before Billy Vukovich of Fresno, Calif., nosed into first.
Vukovich, the eventual third place driver, could hold off Andretti for only seven laps before Andretti grabbed the front spot and held it to the finish.
When Art Pollard of Bedford Ore., crashed into the fence on the 80th lap, the field bunched behind the leader, but Andretti weathered the challenge.
