Ramo Stott won the 200-lap IMCA late model stock car contest at the Minnesota State Fair.
St. Paul, Minn. (September 3, 1964) – Torrid driving and a remarkable 18-second pit stop enabled Ramo Stott of Keokuk, Iowa, to capture the Minnesota State Fair’s 16th annual 200-lap late model stock car feature on Thursday afternoon before 15,140 race fans.
Stott covered the distance in 1 hour, 20 minutes, and 14.73 seconds.
The 30-year-old Iowan was the only driver to complete the full distance. He came home more than two laps ahead of runner-up Johnny Beauchamp of Harlan, Iowa.
Stott and Beauchamp both drove 1964 Plymouths. Stott picked up $1,000 and Beauchamp took home $750.
Dick Hutcherson of Keokuk, Iowa, winner of the 25 and 100-lap features on Tuesday and Wednesday, finished third with 197 laps completed. Hutcherson added $600 to his first two day’s totals of $1,500.
A full minute pit stop by Hutcherson on lap 120 was his undoing. His crew had to change the right rear tire as well as add fuel and water. While Hutcherson was in the pits, he lost his second-place position behind Stott and never recovered.
