1982 – Knoxville ‘Twin 16’s’ to Swindell

Sammy Swindell

Knoxville, Iowa (July 10, 1982) – Sammy Swindell drove to a clean sweep of the “Twin 16’s” at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night before full house.

The once-a-year favorite event of many spectators saw Swindell win the first feature from his front row starting position, leading start to finish. The contest established a new record for 16 laps with Swindell clocking the event in 5 minutes and 4.33 seconds.

Swindell’s victory in the first feature placed the Bartlett, Tenn., pilot on the tail end of the second feature.

In the that feature, Swindell’s advance on the lead took only two circuits while second and third place finishers in both features, John Stevenson and Jeff Swindell had more difficulty in heavy traffic.

The second feature was yellow flagged on the very first lap when Mike Pinckney ran out of racing surface and hit a stack of hay bales that had been placed around standing water on the inside of the track.

Heavy rains the last two days had made racing questionable in the early afternoon. A second shower came only minutes after the completion of the evening’s program.

Stevenson’s two runner-up finishes advanced the St. Paul, Minn., into the point’s lead over Tim Green. Green experienced mechanical issues early in the day and was a non-factor for the evening.

Swindell completed his sweep of the program by setting fast time in qualifying, touring the half-mile in 17.705 seconds, winning the trophy dash, and the fourth heat.

Mark Shaffer, Junior Parkinson, and Stevenson were also heat winners. Danny Smith won the 12-lap B-main.

A total of 44 sprinters were on hand.
