1968 – Walkup a Winner at Dayton

Dayton, Ohio (July 7, 1968) - Bruce Walkup of Downey, Calif., scored his first USAC sprint feature win of the season on Sunday afternoon at the Dayton Speedway.

Walkup started in fourth position, worked his way to second behind leader Sonny Ates of Sellersburg, Ind. Then with five laps remaining Ates experienced mechanical failure and relinquished the lead to Walkup.

Ates had set a world record in time trials with a clocking of 16.85 seconds, breaking his own record set earlier this season at the Winchester, Ind., Speedway.

Trailing Walkup across the finish line were Larry Dickson, third, Greg Weld; fourth, Wib Spaulding, and fifth, Cy Fairchild.

Heat winners consisted of Ates, Walkup, Johnny Parsons Jr. and Spaulding.
