Bob Shryock
Webster City, Iowa (July 8, 1978) – Bob Shryock of Estherville, grabbed the mid-season championship at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds on Saturday night. Shryock started on the outside of the front row and immediately grabbed the lead. He would stay there for the remaining 16 laps.
It started raining on about lap 12 of the scheduled 30-lapper, and by the 16th go-round, Don Cryder, the track promoter, called the feature and declared Shryock the winner of the rain-shortened contest.
Several competitors tried unsuccessfully to get around Shryock during those 16 laps but couldn’t get it done. Jerry Holtkamp of Williams started on the pole and for a while, it looked as though he was going to give Shryock a hard time.
But, after having some mechanical issues earlier in the heat races, Holtkamp slowed his pace and dropped back to third.
Dan Nesteby of Waterloo came from his seventh position and took over second place when Holtkamp faltered. However, a few laps later, Nesteby got bitten by the same mechanical bug and he dropped off the pace as well.
Holtkamp reassumed second place and then fought off Ted Zieman of Mason City and Bob Hill of Randall for his spot. They would finish in that order.
Dean Schroeder of Iowa Falls captured the sportsman mid-season honors. Schroeder started in the eighth position and did a superb job of moving through the field. He would pass Steve Coe of Ames on lap 12 for the lead and never relinquish it.
