1962 – Scroggins Steals Win at West Union

Colby Scroggins

West Union, Iowa (August 21, 1962) – Pete Folse had another victory stolen from him on Tuesday night at the Fayette County Fair, the second time in three days that ill-fortune has crossed the path of the two-time IMCA national champion.

Folse had moved the Hector Honore Offenhauser into the lead on the backstretch of the 15th and final lap of the feature and appeared ready to get some avenge for Sunday’s setback in Des Moines.

However, Folse got boxed in behind Buzz Rose, who was being lapped on the narrow track. Colby Scroggins of Eagle Rock, Calif., regained the lead and held on for the last quarter mile to win, giving him a sweep of the card, with the fastest time in qualifying, and victories in his heat race and the trophy dash.

A capacity crowd of 3,500 watched Scroggins set fast time with 24.31 seconds. Folse timed in at 24.63, good for second fastest.

It was Scroggin’s second win over Folse in International Motor Contest Association competition since the West Coast star came to the Midwest for the fair season. And it marked the 10th feature victory in 12 starts for the Chevrolet pilot, the point leader in the California Racing Association.

Although he finished second, Folse was able to gain a little precious ground on IMCA point leader Johnny Rutherford of Fort Worth, Tex., who bypassed Tuesday night’s race.

In addition to Scroggins, victory, Johnny White of Warren, Mich., and Don O’Riley of Los Angeles were also heat winners.
